The Power of the Wind

The power of the wind has been harnessed by people for thousand years. One of the first uses of the wind power was to propel sailing boats across the sea. Another use of wind is power started around a thousand years ago when we consider how the power of the wind can be used.

One country which is often associatedwith wind power is Holland. for hundreds of years they have been used to turn the power of the wind into mechanical energy. sometimes windmills were used to pump water.

Today, wind power is often used yo generate electricity. the first wind turbine was invented in Denmark in the late 1970s. It is really only since this time that people have begun to think of the wind as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Since this time, however, there has been a hugh growth in the use of wind turbines to generate electricity. wind turbines can now be found in may areas of the World. a number of countries have set targets to increase the amount of electricity they generate from wind power. For example, by 2010, at least 10% of britain's electricity should come from wind power.

Giant "wind farms" can now be found in a number of different countries. some of these wind farms are on land, but increasingly they are being built in the sea. sometimes the are as far as 16 km away from island.
